High-performance codecs like Apple ProRes and HAP are fully supported but require a powerful CPU and a dedicated GPU for stable real-time decoding.

What differentiates PLAYDECK from consumer media players?

Unlike standard software players that only utilize the Windows extended desktop, PLAYDECK outputs video signals via professional hardware playout cards connected via USB, Thunderbolt, or PCIe. This allows signal delivery in precise broadcast formats via SDI, HDMI, NDI, or fiber optic.

Additionally, PLAYDECK offers specialized live event features, including a real-time Block Timer, a dynamic Schedule Block for automated timelines, a separate Production Window (Director View) for the crew, and real-time Edit-while-Ingest recording capabilities in the Studio Edition.

Can I mix different video formats within a playlist?

Yes. PLAYDECK supports the seamless playback and real-time cross-fading of clips with different resolutions, frame rates, and video codecs within the same playlist.

Can I use graphics and static images in the playlist?

Yes. You can add static image files, including .bmp, .png, .jpg, and .tga, directly into your active playlist.

Can I configure a specific display duration for graphics?

Yes. You can assign a global default display duration to all graphics or manually configure individual durations. Options include displaying a graphic for a set amount of time, until a specific clock time, or indefinitely. Graphics can also utilize cross-fades from the previous video clip or into the subsequent asset.

Can I play 8K, 4K, and Ultra HD videos with PLAYDECK?

Yes, all PLAYDECK editions support high-resolution 4K and 8K playback. Please ensure your hardware system meets the required CPU/GPU performance benchmarks, especially when running simultaneous multi-channel playout or Edit-while-Ingest recordings.

How does PLAYDECK handle interlaced video files?

PLAYDECK adapts automatically to your project settings. If your playlist and output format are set to an interlaced standard (e.g., 1080/50i), fields are output natively. If a progressive format is selected (e.g., 1080/50p), the engine performs high-quality real-time de-interlacing.

What do the “Resolution Mismatch” and “Frame Rate Mismatch” warnings mean?

These warnings indicate that a clip’s native properties do not match your current global output settings. For optimal performance and the lowest possible CPU load, we recommend matching your asset properties with your selected hardware output format to avoid unnecessary real-time conversion.

Can I configure a permanent background layer (e.g., a welcome screen)?

Yes. You can select any graphic or video file to serve as a permanent, looping background layer that displays automatically whenever no playlist content is actively broadcasting. For best results, ensure your background video is rendered as a seamless loop.

Can I fade playlist items and audio in and out from the background?

Yes. Triggers can seamlessly fade video assets in and out from the configured background layer. The corresponding audio track will automatically execute a parallel volume fade.

Advanced Playback Functions

Why is the user interface so minimalistic?

PLAYDECK is designed with a strict focus on mission-critical operational safety during stressful live events. To minimize user error, advanced configuration options and non-essential tools are tucked away into easily accessible toolbar icons and right-click context menus.

Can I import and export playlists via XML or CSV?

Yes. Complete playlists can be exported and imported as XML files to allow external pre-production or layout templating. Appending an XML playlist during a live show will not disrupt active playout. Additionally, playlists can be exported as CSV files for post-event broadcast reporting.

Can I adjust the audio volume of individual clips?

Yes. You can manually adjust and tag each clip with an individual playback volume level. For automated mixing, the Plus and Studio editions feature built-in ITU 1770 Audio Loudness Normalization, which automatically calibrates all clips to the same perceived loudness level in real time.

Does setting in/out points or Loudness Normalization alter my original media files?

No. PLAYDECK operates entirely non-destructively. In and out points are saved purely as metadata reference points. Loudness normalization adjusts the output volume processing in real-time, leaving the original source files completely untouched.

Can I preview a playlist item while another clip is currently on air?

Yes. You can open and preview any clip in a dedicated, independent preview window at any time by clicking the preview icon in the toolbar, without affecting the active live output feed.

Can I transcode clips directly inside PLAYDECK?

Yes. PLAYDECK features an integrated transcoding tool to convert selected clips into a GPU-supported video codec. This is particularly useful for optimizing ProRes files, which do not decode natively via the GPU. The transcode tool can also download and convert remote web or cloud video streams.

What are Action Buttons?

Action Buttons are highly customizable instant-trigger buttons. They can be mapped to execute complex commands, such as playing a specific clip block and instantly returning to the previous playhead position, or starting and stopping remote live streams.

What are Overlay Buttons?

Overlay Buttons allow you to place full-screen graphics or transparent assets containing an alpha channel over the active video output at the touch of a button. Size, transparency, position, and fade times are completely adjustable, making them ideal for permanent station IDs, channel logos, or lower thirds.

Can I cue specific timecodes or scenes during a rehearsal?

Yes. PLAYDECK allows you to create precise jump marks (Markers) via the timeline editor. These markers can be triggered instantly via keyboard shortcuts, UI buttons, or Bitfocus Companion commands to speed up show rehearsals.

Workflow & Integration

What data do the GUI timers display?

The interface features two primary tracking elements: a Clip Timer displaying either the elapsed or remaining runtime of the active video file, and a Block Timer displaying the total remaining runtime of the currently playing playlist block.

Does the Block Timer account for custom clip trim settings (In/Out points)?

Yes. The Block Timer dynamically calculates total runtime based on active parameters. If a clip has been shortened using custom in and out points, only the remaining trimmed duration is calculated.

Does the Block Timer update if I skip a clip last minute?

Yes. Clear, color-coded countdown warnings are displayed on both the main user interface and the Director View. You can also configure customizable audio alerts to trigger a specific number of seconds before an asset finishes.

Can I synchronize and control multiple playlist channels simultaneously?

Yes. By activating the LINK button in the top Cockpit panel, you can control two independent playlists simultaneously via a single master console. An active link status is clearly flagged in the Cockpit to prevent accidental operational errors. This includes full support for virtual machines (VMs) and cloud architectures like Amazon AWS. macOS is not supported.

What are the recommended hardware specifications?

The single most critical hardware component is a dedicated NVIDIA GPU (RTX 3060 or better is highly recommended). CPU requirements remain low unless you rely heavily on CPU-decoded formats like ProRes, DNxHD, or HAP. Standard H.264 and H.265 (HEVC) .mp4 containers utilize full GPU hardware decoding, offloading the processing entirely from your CPU.

Which hardware form factors work best for mobile productions?

For mobile or flypack operations, we recommend high-performance Gaming Laptops (such as Razer Blade) combined with external Blackmagic UltraStudio capture cards via a Thunderbolt interface. Avoid enterprise or business-class laptops (e.g., standard Dell Office lines), as their aggressive built-in power-saving profiles can severely throttle real-time playout performance and cause frame drops.

Can I use professional multi-channel SDI I/O hardware?

Yes. As a professional broadcast solution, PLAYDECK is fully optimized for external hardware playout cards. The video engine delivers high-quality signal routing without introducing additional CPU load. Fully supported manufacturers include Blackmagic Design (DeckLink/UltraStudio), AJA, Deltacast, Bluefish444, DekTec, Magewell, and StreamLabs.

Licensing & Deployment

How does the free trial version work, and what are its limits?

The free trial version unlocks access to all three software tiers (Lite, Plus, and Studio) to let you test every feature indefinitely. You can switch tiers at any time via the “License” menu. The trial version allows full playlist building, editing, remote control, and hardware I/O testing. The only restrictions are a subtle visual watermark on the video outputs and short, random audio mutes to prevent unauthorized commercial live use.

How do I receive my credentials and activate a purchased license?

Immediately following your purchase, your secure access credentials will be sent to your registered email address (please check your spam filter if delayed). If your production environment lacks reliable internet access, you can choose an Offline License (permanently locked to a specific PC’s hardware ID) or a Dongle License (stored on a physical USB security dongle for easy transfer between offline systems). Both options are available for annual Plus and Studio tiers. Contact support@playdeck.tv for deployment.

I reinstalled my OS and forgot to deactivate my license. How can I recover it?

If a system crash or OS reinstallation traps your license on an old system ID, simply email our team at support@playdeck.tv. We will instantly reset your license pool seat on our servers so you can check it back out onto your machine right away.

Can I test a higher tier feature if I currently hold a lower tier license?

Yes. You can toggle between an active commercial license and the evaluation demo tier at any time. Open the License Manager, select the evaluation license under Local Licenses, click Activate, and restart the app. You can then go back to the “License” menu and select “Change Trial License” to unlock and test any higher tier.

Does PLAYDECK require an active internet connection at every application launch?

No. PLAYDECK never performs online license validation checks during standard application startups. An active internet connection is strictly required only when you wish to check a license out from your online pool, or check it back in to move it to a completely different computer system.

Is the entry-level Lite edition suitable for professional environments?

Yes. Features that are often marketed as premium upgrades in other software alternatives come completely standard in PLAYDECK Lite. This includes seamless cross-fades, clean cuts, static graphic integration with custom durations, freezing on the last video frame, and access to the exact same high-performance broadcast video engine found in our upper tiers.
